Warner Robins, GA- Elton Eugene Ashford, Sr., 83, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at the Houston Medical Center. The visitation with family and friends will be held on Friday, February 9, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Burpee-Scott Memorial Chapel & Crematory. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 11:00 am at Friendship Baptist Church with Reverend Paul Cowles officiating. The interment will take place immediately following the services at Magnolia Park Cemetery with military honors.
Elton was born on May 27, 1934 in Water Valley, MS to the late Paul Clanton and Daisey Mae (Crews) Ashford. The family moved to the Mississippi Delta near the four Mile community near Sky Lake Bend when Elton was four years old. He attended the Four Mile Elementary School for first and second grades and transferred to the Belzoni Elementary School for his third grade year and graduated high school there in 1952. Elton attended Sunflower Junior College where he obtained a Business degree in 1954. Also in 1954, Elton married his longtime sweetheart Elsie Millwood and entered the United States Air Force two weeks after they were married. He completed his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX and was assigned to Eglin Air Force Base in Fort Walton Beach for one year before being transferred to Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa. Elton left Okinawa in 1956 and was assigned to Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana where he remained until being reassigned to Chatauroux Air Station France in 1961. He and his family returned to Klamath Falls Oregon in 1965 where he was stationed for a few months until being honorably discharged for a medical condition. While serving in the military, Elton continued his education through various prestigious college programs and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management.
Upon his separation from the Air Force , Elton began his career as a civilian employee as a management trainee with the Air Force at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, GA where he retired in 1989 after a very successful career.
Elton was a very God fearing and loving man, who served and worshipped his Lord at Friendship Baptist Church and was member of the Senior Men’s Sunday School Class. In addition to his first wife and parents, Elton was preceded in death by a daughter, Amelia Ann Phillips.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 4 years, Lorna (Millar) Ashford of Warner Robins, GA; daughter: Sharon Lea Bowman (Larry) of Atlanta, GA; son: Elton Eugene Ashford, Jr. (Catherine) of Ellijay, GA; 4 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; brother: Herman Ashford of Jackson, MS; sisters: Frances Inman of Helena, AR and Delphia Hirth of Gulf Port, MS.
