Obituary for Jane Chapman (Snyder)

Perry, Ga- Jane Snyder Chapman passed away Friday, July 30, 2021 at the Oaks Nursing Home in Marshallville, Georgia. She was a native of Madison, Georgia and moved to Perry when she was 16. She was preceded in death by her parents W.I. Snyder and Frances R. Snyder, sisters Patricia (Mrs. Edwin) Stovall and Catherine (Mrs. Ray) Wolf. Survivors include her husband of 69 years Henry Edward Chapman Sr., daughter Carol Gorman (Jody), and sons Ed Chapman Jr. (Richilynn), and Snyder Chapman; and sister Mary Nan Grimes. Jane had 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.
Jane attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, (now Georgia College and State University) to become an elementary school teacher. She left college and married Ed Chapman who was in the service at the time. They later settled in Perry and she went to work in 1960 for her father-in-law, the late Sheriff C. C. Chapman and stayed through several administrations until 1993. She carries the distinction of being the first female in the state of Georgia to achieve the certified rank of Lieutenant, while serving 33 years as the head of the Houston County Sheriff Department. Jane received the Liberty Bell Award twice, the most prestigious award given by lawyers to a non-lawyer in recognition of outstanding community service.
Jane worked outside the home in a full-time career while most of her peers were stay-at-home mothers. She joked that she would save hobbies for old age. After retirement at 65, she held true to her word and started watercolor classes. She was a lifetime member of the Perry United Methodist Church. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at a future date.
