Obituary for Joan Pearline Horn (Brown)

–Fort Valley, GA – Joan Pearline (Brown) Horn, 90, passed away on Saturday, June 18, 2022.
Joan was born in Enid, OK to the late Lloyd and Jesse Victoria (Martinek) Brown on March 25, 1932. Joan was predeceased by her loving husband, Keith William Horn. Joan worked as a program trainer at Oklahoma Head Start. Upon retirement, Joan was able to indulge in her passions – her family and spending time with them. She enjoyed swimming and was an excellent seamstress. Joan loved animals- especially dogs.
Joan is survived by her adoring children: Jimmie Fouts (Margaret) Ft. Valley, GA; Daniel Fouts (Pam) Russellville, AR; Louise Fouts Hollenshead (Doug) Wilburton, OK; Janet Fouts Bush (Tom) Wichita, KS; Phyllis Fouts Tutor (Ned) Las Cruces, NM; and Douglas Horn (Tevis) Williamsburg, MI; and 19 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Joan was the third and last-born child of Lloyd and Jessie Brown. She was born March 25, 1932, in Enid, Oklahoma. Jesse taught her daughter to read before she started to school; thus, she was very successful and always had a strong desire to read.

As an infant, the family resided in Enid, Oklahoma. Even considering the tornados, floods, cold winters, and hot summers with blowing dust the family survived. Shortly after the birth of Joan, the family moved in 1933, but remained in Enid. Her father’s suicide, when Joan was age 3, brought many changes to the family including a move to Garber, Oklahoma. Although the depression still lingered, her mother held the family together the best she could doing ironing and sewing along with other miscellaneous jobs. Her older sister Nina, and older brother Jack, assisted as well as needed. Nina graduated from high school in 1938 when Joan was just beginning the first grade. Nina married the following year and moved to attend college. However, Nina did return to Garber later that same year, residing with her husband in Garber. Nina often cared for Joan so Jesse could continue to work as a single parent. Around the time of World War II, Jesse met Johnny Swinford. He was preparing to travel to Europe to serve with General Patton but wanted to ensure Jesse and the family would be cared for. Jesse married just days prior to Johnnies departure to serve. Joan often mentioned that as children in school they would collect any metal and cans that they could find to assist in the war effort. Although very difficult, Johnnie did keep In touch with the family and since he had worked in his parent’s bakery in his younger years, he became the personal baker for the General. Upon the return of Johnnie, when Joan was 10, she experienced the love of a father again, missing so much in her younger years. Jesse and Johnnie opened a bakery in Garber and Joan helped with making bread and wrapping it for customers in her high school years.

Not long after graduation from Garber High School in 1950, she married James Fouts from Breckinridge, Oklahoma. They moved into a small one-bedroom house on Jackson Street in Enid. Her first child Jimmie was born (1951), He was followed by Daniel (1953), Joan Louise (1955), Janet (1957), and Phyllis (1958). Joan also divorced James that year. The following year, Joan met Keith William Horn who was an airman from Glasco, Kansas stationed in Enid. This became the true love of her life. He loved her. He also loved her children as if they were her own biological offspring. The marriage was just before Keith was being transferred to Williams AFB in Arizona. Thus, the family travelled away from the middle of Oklahoma for the first time. Douglas William was born at the base hospital in 1962. As an Air Force family, moving was a part of the game. The family moved from Arizona, after 5 years, to Kansas temporarily then to England. Following 3 years there, they moved to Denison, Texas where Keith was stationed for about a year before being assigned to serve in Vietnam near Saigon for a year. Upon his completion of the service there, they again moved back for another tour in England followed by a tour in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Keith retired with 20 years of service following that tour.

Joan and Keith opened a very successful sewing machine store in Alamogordo where they remained several years. With children now grown and on their own, Joan and Keith moved to Simpson, Kansas followed by a return to Enid, Oklahoma. While Keith was employed at Vance Air Force Base, Joan served with Head Start of Oklahoma and for a short time as a Real Estate Agent.

They moved to the Spanish American War Colony at Wilburton, Oklahoma in retirement. They enjoyed travel in their RV from Florida to Alaska and points in between. They also served as Campground Hosts at Custer State Park (South Dakota). When Keith became increasingly ill, the result of Agent Orange exposure during Vietnam, they returned to their home in Wilburton where Keith passed in 1999. Joan remained in Wilburton for about 6 years before moving to Russellville, Arkansas and then to Bob Hope Retirement Village in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. She moved to Georgia in 2020 and then to assisted living at Arbor Manor in Perry, Georgia until her death June 18, 2022.

Joan's Service will be held September 2nd, 2022 at 1:00 pm at US War Veterans Colony in Wilburton Oklahoma.
