Obituary for Joyce Bledsoe

Joyce Andrew Bledsoe, 90, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away Friday, July 3, 2020 at Taylor Care Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Bledsoe, her parents Benjamin and Aline Andrew, Roy Mims, the father of her children, and her niece, Andrea Chappell.

Joyce was born in Perry, GA on Christmas Day, 1930. She graduated from Perry High School and Wesleyan College, Cum Laude. She was a long time member of the Perry Methodist Church.

After her first marriage she lived in Jacksonville, Florida where her four children were born and raised. She began her teaching career there and she earned her Masters degree from Jacksonville University and her Reading Specialist degree from University of Florida. She became the Reading Specialist for the Duval County Schools accomplishing this while being a devoted single mother.

She later remarried and returned to Perry where she lived for 30 years renewing many relationships with family and friends. She was blessed to help care for her father, step mother, aunts and uncles at the end of their lives. While in Perry, she taught at Westfield School.

Following her husband's death she returned to Jacksonville and enjoyed her last years with her very attentive children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She became active in the Lakewood Methodist Church and enjoyed Sunday School and Church services and many friends.

Joyce loved her children unconditionally and sacrificially as well as her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a loving sister and a trusted friend. She was an avid reader and was instrumental in passing on the love of books. She was loved and admired by all who knew her and will be missed. Her courageous soul was evident through her illness and isolation in the pandemic.

Joyce is survived by her daughter, Joye Preston (Mark), Jacksonville, FL; sons, David Mims, Perry, GA; Ben Mims (Sam), Jacksonville, FL; Bob Mims (Jan), Jacksonville, FL; stepsons, Brad Bledsoe, Anderson, SC; Bob Bledsoe, Perry, GA; Lee Bledsoe, Savannah, GA; sister, Bennieta Chappell (Bill), Dalton, GA and nephew, Billy Chappell (Jackie), Dalton, GA. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren whom she loved and they were inspired by her life.

A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Perry, GA on Friday, July 24, 2020 at 10:30 with Reverend Roland Falls officiating.
