Obituary for Lucille Crysell (Covan)

Jacksonville- Lucille Covan Crysell passed away peacefully at the home of her sister on Sunday November 26, 2017.
She was born in Pine Apple, Alabama September 28,1922. She grew up on a farm in Georgiana, Ala. with her parents Claude C. and Rebecca Solomon Covan, two brothers Stafford and Ullman Covan and two sisters Louise Covan Nix and Lorraine Covan Kogos.
Lucille received degrees from Troy University and the University of Florida (M.Ed.). She did post graduate studies at Harvard University in 1964. Lucille was a pioneer in education for the Duval County School Board in Jacksonville, Florida. She developed the school Guidance Program that started locally and is now nationwide. The Lucille Crysell Award was created in her honor to recognize outstanding performance in the field of Guidance Counseling. She went on to create the Dropout Prevention Program, the Drug Awareness and Prevention program, and the very first Career Fair for Duval County high schools. She was once named “Woman of the Year” for the State of Florida.
Lucille loved tennis and ballroom dancing, but her first love was travel. She travelled the world many times and inspired others to do the same.
She is survived by sister Louise C. Nix, three nieces Linda Covan Cole, Lisa Nix Brooks, and Tricia Nix and six nephews Carl Covan, Gene Covan (Ada), Ray Covan (Barbara), Ron Kogos (Kathy), Gerald Kogos (Kitty), and Don Kogos (Colleen).
Services will be held in her hometown of McKenzie, Ala. at Mount Olive West Baptist Church on Saturday December 2 at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Duval County Humane Society at 8464 Beach Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32216.
