Obituary for TSgt. Dwight Huggins, USAF (Ret.)

Olin Dwight Huggins, who was the second oldest of five siblings was born on May 23rd, 1960 in Manhattan, New York to the late Olin Dewitt Huggins and Mary Atkins. He departed this life on Thursday February 18th, 2021 at his residence in Fort Valley, Georgia.

Olin was raised in Bronx, NY in Building 3 of Marble Hill Projects. He attended private school at St. John’s for elementary and middle school. He went to St. Nicholas of Tolentine High School and graduated in 1978. Olin’s first job was at Tony’s Butcher Shop where he used his money to help pay his way through high school. During all four years of school, Olin played basketball and became the first African-American player on the team. He quickly rose to become an in-tegral part of the basketball team, and was a star player during Nationals. In 1975 he was vital in helping St. Tolentine carry the title as the number one ranked team in the nation.

After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during which he obtained a degree from DeVry Tech. Within 20 years of active duty service Olin spent time oversees in Hessisch-Oldendorf Air Force Base (AFB) (Germany), Torrejon AFB (Spain), and Incirlik AFB (Turkey). Stateside he was stationed in Lowry AFB (Colorado), Dyess AFB (Texas), Keesler AFB (Mississippi), Shaw AFB (South Carolina) Hill AFB (Utah), and Robins AFB (Georgia) where he retired. After retirement he began a civilian career with the U.S. Army at Fort Benning, GA where he continued to work until his passing. In total he served the military for over 40 years.

Olin became a Christian in 1985 at a Baptist Church in Columbia, SC. While stationed in Germany, he was ordained as a minister by Pastor Kevin Brown. Olin also served in ministry in Spain along side his close friend Dr. Stanley Williams, whom he was particularly close to.

Olin never met a stranger, and his charismatic personality made a great impression on everyone who met him. He loved to have a good time, loved to dance and loved music, and always had quick wit and a warm smile. Olin’s hobbies include traveling, fishing, and bee keeping.
Olin leaves to cherish his memories: His wife, Filiz Huggins, children: Christian (Heather) Huggins, Ashley (Harrison) Taylor, Cennet Huggins, Felicia (Alex) Johnson, and Joshua Allen. His mother: Mary Atkins, siblings: Cheryl Moment, Kibra (Alan) Williams, Denise Huggins, Jason Huggins, and Audrey Atkins. Five grandchildren: Christian Huggins Jr., Selena Huggins, Olivia Huggins, Lauren Taylor, and Mackenzie Johnson. Olin had a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives that he loved dearly. He was blessed to have a multitude of friends who cared for him deeply as well. He was preceded in his death by his father Olin “June” Dewitt Huggins and Alphonso Atkins.
