Obituary for Vassar "Vi" Jones (Brown)

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Psalms 91: 1-2 is a scripture that Vassar Brown Jones lived by each day. Vassar, affectionately known as Vi, was a devout Christian who spent each passing day striving to be the hands and feet of Christ. Her love for her Savior and others, is a testament to the person she was and the life she lived. Vi believed in the power of prayer and spent many hours each day praying for family and friends.

Growing up in Taylor County, Georgia, Vassar was the epitome of a Southern Lady. While being short in stature, Vi had a vibrant personality. She made many friends and shared her love of southern cooking, hospitality and culture to everyone she met in her new home of Vero Beach, Florida when she and her husband, James “Bruce” Jones, moved in 1959. Their home was always brimming with family and friends as Vassar loved to entertain. Their home served as a gathering place for holidays, church socials and also as a refuge for those who needed the love of a Godly family. Vi and Bruce often opened their home to those who needed a place to stay and be extended the love of their family. They both showed others the love of Christ daily. Vassar was a homemaker and helped Bruce with his business, Jones Spreader Service. She admired God’s creation daily and loved the beach. When Vi was younger she would often take morning walks on the beach before getting ready to head into work. She also enjoyed gardening and growing flowers. Vi enjoyed being in nature and had an appreciation for the beauty that surrounded her, especially birds.

“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” 1 Peter 3:3-4 As a cosmetologist, Vi used her God given talents as a beloved hairstylist to minister to her clients each day. She believed that beauty began on the inside beginning with a personal relationship with Christ. She believed in building others up and the importance of knowing one’s self-worth, making them feel loved and beautiful. In 1987 she opened her own Salon and Day Spa, Total Woman. Vi loved being a cosmetologist. She also loved to teach others. In her early years, Vi would often give demonstrations at hair shows on the latest beauty techniques and tools. She also served as officer in her state cosmetology association. Up until her death, Vi was still faithful to her salon and clients, now known as Vassar’s Hair and Skin in Vero Beach, Florida. The salon is now operated by her daughter, Vicky, who also shares Vi’s love for cosmetology. While she owned and operated a successful business, she would often say her greatest success was her relationship with Jesus.

One of Vassar’s greatest accomplishments was being a mother, a task she did not take lightly. Bruce and Vi raised two beautiful daughters, Vicky and Becci. As a mother, Vassar encouraged her children to seek Jesus. She taught them the importance of loving others, putting God first and working hard. Vassar and Bruce were proud of their daughters and took active roles in their lives and the lives of their friends. She supported their passions and encouraged their education and careers. Vassar then welcomed their spouses with open arms and loved them as though they were her own. While she loved her children dearly, her grandchildren and later great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. If she was not showing you one of their recent pictures, she was telling you about them and their recent accomplishments. She enriched the lives of all who knew her just by simply being there.
