Obituary for Walter Gilbert Sammons Jr.

Walter Gilbert “Bo” Sammons Jr., of Kathleen, Georgia, passed away on February 8, 2024. Visitation will be held on February 11, 2024, from 5-7 pm at Burpee-Scott Memorial Chapel and Crematory. His memorial service will be held on February 12, 2024, at 11 am at Burpee-Scott Memorial Chapel and Crematory. Afterwards, Bo will be laid to rest at Parkway Memorial Gardens.

Bo was born on December 28, 1957, in Jacksonville, Florida, to Walter G. Sammons Sr. and Anne Sammons. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism in 1981. Following graduation, he worked as a newspaper reporter for The Macon Telegraph. In 1985, Bo enrolled in the College of Law at Georgia State University, graduating in 1988. After graduating, he practiced law in middle Georgia for 35 years. In 1996, Bo was appointed Special Assistant Attorney General for the Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) of Houston County. He served in this capacity for 28 years. As attorney for DFCS, he was a fierce advocate for the children of Houston County.

Bo was also a past president of the Houston County Bar Association. In 2013, Bo received the Attorney General’s Cup award for the Legal Food Frenzy competition sponsored by then Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens. As part of the competition, Bo collected 4,609 pounds of food for the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank.

Outside of practicing law, Bo also enjoyed serving in other ways, often working with young people. He coached Upward Basketball teams for 20 years, frequently coaching multiple teams in a season. Two of the teams he coached won championships. He taught Middle and High School Sunday School classes and was a counselor for the youth ministry at Christ United Methodist Church. Bo also loved playing the guitar. He was a founding member of The Alex Tjoland Band (TATB). The band played at Christ United Methodist Church, Relay for Life, and other local community events. TATB recorded 2 albums, with Bo writing the songs.

Bo loved spending time with his family, and left to treasure his memory are his wife, Angela Sammons, children Zachary, Rachel, and Jacob Sammons, his nephew Braylin Jones, sisters Lila Brawley (Bill), Julie Stauss (Drew), and Kellie McCollum (Bill) and nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends consider making a donation to the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank (mgcfb.org).
