Perry, GA – Wiley L. “Herky” Baxter, 79, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at Atrium Health Navicent in Macon, GA. Services for family and friends will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at 11:00 am at Burpee-Scott Memorial Chapel & Crematory with a visitation being held an hour prior. Reverend Mike Slade will be officiating. In Lieu of flowers, the family has asked for all donations to be made to the building fund for Second Baptist Church.
Herky was born on December 21, 1943, in Boston, Georgia to the late Wiley C. and Mary Francis (Hatcher) Baxter. He worked as an employee relations specialist at Robins Air Force base for many years before retiring. As a young adult, Herky was the coach for football, baseball, and basketball at the Recreation Department and had the pleasure of coaching Kal Daniels, a professional baseball Left fielder. In his free time, Herky enjoyed golfing and fishing and was a huge Auburn Fan. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: Michael Baxter (Tina), Joseph Baxter (Heather), and Traci Chesser (Russ); grandchildren: Jacob (Dixie), Brad, Mary (Daniel), Mitch, Samantha, William (Brittney), and Harrison; great-grandchildren: Fletcher, Bo, and Dax; sister: Sue “Suzie” Kensinger (Larry); brother: Henry Baxter (Karen); and Sylvia Baxter.
