Obituary for William Woodrow Sheppard Sr.

William Woodrow Sheppard, Sr., (Bill) age 80, passed away on April 10, 2022, in Warner Robins, Ga. Bill was born to parents Riah Ransom Sheppard and Evangelene Booth Sheppard on February 11, 1942, in Washington, North Carolina.

Bill graduated high school from Hillsborough High School in Tampa, Florida in 1960, where he ran track and cross country. Bill joined the United States Navy in the summer of 1960. He spent 28.3 faithful years as an Aviation Aerographer (AG) in the Navy before he retired in 1988 as a Chief Petty Officer (AGC). Bill served in Vietnam, he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Bill’s favorite thing to do was spending time with family and friends. He loved to meet new people and tell many stories. He was beloved in every community he lived in, and he always made people around him have a good laugh.

He was also a referee for many sports such as football, baseball, softball, volleyball, and his favorite sport girls fast pitch softball. He enjoyed spending time watching football, baseball, and College basketball. Bill was inducted into the Eastern Virginia Officials Association Hall of Fame in 2004.

Bill was a devoted family man; he absolutely adored his wife Ann of 59 years. After being retired from the Navy, Bill worked as a civil service Aviation Aerographer program manager at NAS Norfolk in Norfolk, Virginia for 17 years before retiring from the civil service.

Bill is preceded in death by Evanglene Sheppard and Riah Sheppard (Parents), Robert R. Sheppard (Brother) and Robert T. Sheppard (Son).

Bill is survived by Betty Ann Sheppard (Wife), Elton Sheppard (Brother), William Woodrow (Woody) Sheppard, Jr. (Son), Kevin Michael Sheppard (Son), and Tracie Lynn Sheppard-Yerby (Daughter). Along with grandchildren: Steven, Christian, Chynna, Austin, Paulette, MaKayla, Allison, Zackery, Ransom, Tyler, Noah and great-grandchildren Mercedes, John (L.J.), and Allison.

A service will be held at Burpee-Scott Memorial Chapel & Crematory at 11:00 am Saturday, April 23, 2022, with a small reception following afterwards.
