Obituary for Gerald Rex Moon

Gerald Rex Moon
Perry- Gerald Rex Moon, beloved husband, father and friend passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at the age of 80 in Dublin, Georgia. He was surrounded by his immediate family.

Gerald, also known as Rex, was born August 16, 1936 in Atlanta, Georgia to Raymond S. Moon and Elizabeth H. Moon. Gerald spent his childhood in East Point, Georgia where he attended Russell High School. There he lettered in baseball and wrestling and was voted “Cutest” in class. He went on to Georgia Institute of Technology where he received a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management. He was a member of the U.S. Naval Reserves and received an honorable discharge in August, 1962, the same year he received a Commercial Banking degree from the American Institute of Banking.

After college, Gerald joined First National Bank in Atlanta as a Management Trainee. In 1969 he completed post-graduate coursework at the Stonier Graduate School, Rutgers University. He quickly rose through the ranks of the banking world, and his career took him and his family from Atlanta, Georgia to Richmond, Virginia and Knoxville, Tennessee. At the age of 38, he was initiated into YPO, an exclusive organization that recognizes individuals under 40 years of age who have achieved extraordinary success in their field. After banking, Gerald worked in commercial real estate and as a developer on Sanibel Island and in Ocala, Florida.

Retirement brought Gerald back to his Georgia roots and to the idyllic town of Perry where he and wife Mary Ellen enjoyed many hours each day on their porch, watching the birds, tending their flowers, and feeling the warmth of the Georgia sun. He was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church, Macon, Georgia.

Generous and kind, Gerald greeted others with a warm smile and easy manner. He loved nothing more than his family and his dogs. Quiet by nature and not one to share his own feelings, he was truly interested in others. “How you doing?” he asked. He really wanted to know.

He will be sorely missed by his wife of 56 years, Mary Ellen Burtz Moon, his daughter LaTrelle Scherffius (Brett Walker) of Bozeman, Montana, son Raymond Rex Moon (Paula Mendes Moon) of Sarasota, Florida and Alan Stuart Moon of Columbia, South Carolina. He leaves behind four grandchildren (Liz and Andrew Scherffius, and Zak and Jade Moon), four grand-dogs, one grand-cat and one grand-chameleon. The family will hold a private ceremony and requests memorials be made in his name to The Methodist Home, Macon, GA
or St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital .
Burpee-Scott Memorial Chapel & Crematory has charge of arrangements.
